Definition

気(き)を取(と)り直(なお)す literally means “retake/recollect 気 (mind/spirit)” and figuratively “reset one’s mood”.

Usage

気 (mind) + を + 取り直す (retake)

It is often used as “気を取り直して” as in the example sentence below.

Example

今朝(けさ)食(た)べた朝(あさ)ごはんがあまり美味(おい)しくなくて萎(な)えたけど、気を取り直して仕事(しごと)に集中(しゅうちゅう)しよう。

The breakfast I ate this morning was not very tasty and that turned me off, but let’s reset my mood and focus on my work.
