Japanese Conversation Practice to Master 気-related Idioms

June 2, 2021

This post gives you an example of a casual Japanese conversation, with an aim to help you understand 気-related Japanese expressions better. You may have a shot at reading the following conversation straight away, or check my previous post “30 Japanese Phrases about 気: What Does 気 (ki) Exactly Mean?” first and then learn how they are actually used in a conversation.

(Note) The following conversation was made up by myself, and yet I did my utmost to make it sound as natural as possible. This dialogue contains lots of casual and slang expressions that are usually not covered in a standard textbook, so they may challenge you a bit even if you are an advanced learner.

I was just asked out for a movie next week by Tanaka-kun)

太郎:おーそれ絶対ぜったい花子はなこに気があるじゃん!
Wow, he is definitely interested in you, Hanako!

花子:だよねー。でも正直しょうじき、あまり気が乗のらないかなー。仲なかは良いいんだけど、あまり異性いせいとして気になったことないし。
I know right? But I don’t feel like it tbh. He and I are close but I have never been interested in him as a man (a person of the opposite gender).

太郎:あーそうなんだ、どうして?
I see, why?

花子:うーん、田中君ってちょっと気が小ちいさい所ところがあって、自分じぶんの意見いけんをなかなか言いわないんだよね。それが少すこし男おとこらしくないなーって思おもって。
Hmm, because Tanaka-kun is a bit lacking in self-confidence and he doesn’t often express his opinions. So I find him a bit unmasculine.

太郎:なるほどねー、じゃあ田中には気の毒どくだけど断ことわるしかないね。
Fair enough, then although I feel for Tanaka, you’ve gotta decline the date.

花子:うん、でも同おなじクラスだから断ことわるのも気が引ひけるんだよね。後あとで気まずくなったら嫌いやだし
Yea, but I feel hesitant to decline the date because we are in the same class. I don’t want to feel awkward later.

太郎:まぁ確たしかにそれは気を使つかうかもしれないけど、あまり気にする必要ひつようはないよ。てかさ、元もとカレは気が強つよくて自分の考かんがえを絶対ぜったいに曲まげないのが嫌いやで別わかれたって、前まえ言ってなかった?
Well in that case you may be concerned about what he will feel, but you don’t have to worry about it very much. Btw, didn’t you say before that you broke up with your ex-bf because you didn’t like him being very assertive and never changing his opinions?

花子:そうー、あと気が短みじかくてすぐにキレるのもマジ最悪さいあくだったー
Yea you’re right, and it was so terrible that he was short-tempered and got angry very easily.

太郎:それなら、田中は優やさしくて気が利きくし、実じつは結構けっこういいんじゃない?
Then don’t you think Tanaka is actually a good match for you because he is very kind and attentive to others?

花子:うーん、確かにそんな気がしてきたかも。好すきな曲きょくとかも似にているから、結構気が合うし。
Hmm, yea I might start feeling like that. We actually get along well because we have a similar taste in music.

太郎:よし、じゃあカップル成立せいりつだね!
Then, here is a new couple!

花子:ちょっと、気が早はやいよ!てか、まだOKするって決きめたわけじゃないし!

Hey, you judge too early! I mean like, I haven’t decided to say OK.

太郎:冗談じょうだんだよ、気に障さわったらゴメン笑。まぁ、気が向むいたら映画ぐらい行ってもいいんじゃない?
I’m just joking, soz if you are annoyed lol. Well, if you feel like it, it’s not too bad to go to a movie with him, is it?

花子:そうだねー、てか、うちらさっきから「気」って単語たんごめっちゃ使ってる気がするけど、気のせい?笑
Yea I guess so, btw I feel like we’ve been using the word 気 many times for a while, but is it just me? lol

太郎:確かに、よく気付づいたね!
You’re right, how did you notice that!
