Additional Info

It is often used as “まことしやかに囁かれている”, meaning “(a rumour) is circulating as if it is real”, where 囁(ささや)く means “to whisper”.

まこと is written in 誠 in kanji and means “real”, which is commonly used in the formal apology, 誠に申し訳ございません (“I’m really/sincerely sorry”).

Example

彼が来年引退するという噂が、まことしやかに囁かれている。
A rumour is circulating that he’s going to retire next year as if it’s true.
