解説
なかなか訳しにくい表現です。「ボールを蹴ったら明後日の方向に飛んでいった」のような物理的に方向の場合は、(The ball went to) a completely wrong direction や away from the right direction などのように言えます。また、「議論が明後日の方向に進んでいる」のような場合、be off the mark/base （的外れな）や miss the mark (的を射てない) という表現が比較的意味が近く、その前に way や far という強調語をつけると、より皮肉っぽい感じが出ます。
