一人歩きする

「一人歩きする」の意味

大きく分けて、2つの用法があります。

1. 言葉や発言の一部が切り取られて、誤った解釈と共に広まる
2. (噂など不確かな情報が 、収拾不能なまでに）広まる

なお、文字通り「一人で歩く」（例: 夜道を一人歩きする）という意味もあります。

英訳

1.  (someone’s remarks) be taken out of context and spread widely
2.  (a rumour) circulate (in an unstoppable manner)

解説

be taken out of context は「（言葉が）文脈から切り取られて」という意味で、例えば政治家の発言などの一部が切り取られてその言葉だけが一人歩きしてしまった時に使えます。 spread widely は文字通り「広く広まる」です。二つ目の circulate (循環する) は、噂などが広まった時によく使われる動詞です（収拾不能であることを明示的に表したい場合は、 in an unstoppable manner などと言えます）。

どちらの意味も、ニュアンスまで英訳するのが難しい単語です。

例文

1.「優勝は目指さない」という発言が一人歩きしたせいで、あの監督はやる気がないと批判された。
The head coach was criticised for lacking in motivation because his remark “We won’t aim to win the championship” was taken out of context and spread widely in an unstoppable manner.

1. 私が彼と付き合っているという噂が一人歩きして困っている。
I’m having trouble because the rumour has been circulating (beyond my control) that he and I are in a relationship.
