score は20、dozen（＝ダース）は12を表す単位ですが、「何ダースもの〜」のような感じで多いものを表す時に使います。<\/p>\n
legion(s) of<\/h3>\n
legionは元々「3,ooo-6,000人からなる兵士の部隊」を表す単語だったようで、今でもそのような軍隊のイメージが残っています。しかし、legions of fans のように（まるで軍隊のように）人が沢山いることを表すのにも使えます。この場合、戦争に向かって行進している軍隊のような、統制の取れた群衆をイメージします。そのため、上で紹介した a horde of ~ と真逆のイメージです。<\/p>\n
汚めの表現<\/h2>\n
以下の表現はかなり汚いので、使う相手と場面に注意すべき表現です。例えば、何かがウザすぎるくらい多い時などに使います。<\/p>\n

慣用句（イディオム）<\/h2>\nit takes a village (to raise a child)<\/h3>\n
これは英語の諺で、直訳すると「（一人の子供を育てるには）村全体（の人々）のサポートが必要だ」<\/strong>という意味になります。また、これをもじって “it takes a village of … (to do ~) “<\/strong> の形で使われる事があり、その場合、「（~するには）…の多くのサポートが必要だ」<\/strong>という意味になります。 例えば “It takes a village of volunteers to make the event take place” は「そのイベントを実現するには、多くのボランティア（のサポート）が必要だ)」という意味になります。この時、”a village of” は “a lot of” や他の a 〇〇 of シリーズの表現とほぼ置き換え可能となりますが、village を使うことによりコミュニティーメンバーが（村のように）お互いに協力して何かを行う、といったニュアンスが感じられそうです。<\/p>\na barrel of laughs<\/h3>\n
barrel は「樽」という意味ですが、a barrel of laughs で「たくさんの笑い」もしくは「たくさんの笑いを提供する人、物 （笑いの泉）」という意味になります。例：”We had a barrel of laughs”, “He is a barrel of laughs”.<\/p>\n
a round of applause<\/h3>\n
applause は 「拍手、喝采、称賛」という意味で、 “a round of applause” で「たくさんの拍手」という意味になります。拍手を送る場合は give 、 もらう場合は receive という動詞をよく使います。<\/p>\n
The sky is the limit<\/h3>\n
直訳は「空が限界だ」ですが、転じて「無制限の」 (“limitless”) という意味になります。日本語で言う「青天井」ですね。<\/p>\n
the lion’s share<\/h3>\n
直訳は「ライオンの取り分」ですが、転じて「大部分、ほとんど」や「一番価値があるところ」という意味になります。ライオンは百獣の王と言われるくらいですからね。例えば、the lion’s share of the revenue は「収益の大部分」という意味です。<\/span><\/p>\na king’s ransom<\/span><\/h3>\n直訳は「王様の身代金」ですが、転じて「巨額のお金、大金」という意味になります（王様が何者かによって誘拐された時に要求されるであろう身代金に例えて）。例えば、cost a king’s ransom で「莫大な費用がかかる」という意味になり、後に出てくる “cost an arm and leg” と近い意味になります。<\/p>\n
rain cats and dogs<\/h3>\n
何故かこれで “rain a lot” （たくさん雨が降る）という意味になる、比較的有名なイディオムです。<\/p>\n

直訳は「腕と脚が（費用として）かかる」ですが、実際は「とてつもなく高いコストがかかる」という意味です。<\/p>\n

直訳は「キッチンの流し台以外は全て」という意味で、意味は「想像し得るありとあらゆる物<\/strong>」という意味になります（キッチンの流し台は引っ越しの際に持ち運べないので）。例えば、 “You packed everything but the kitchen sink<\/strong> into your car”. で 「ありとあらゆる物<\/strong>を車に詰め込んだ」という意味になります。また、語源と少しかけ離れる感じもしますが、”This company makes everything but the kitchen sink” のように、何かを持ち運びする時以外の文脈でも使えます。ただ、この場合は個人的に次の “everything under the sun” の方が、「全て」って感じがして好きです。<\/p>\n* なお余談になりますが、2022年にイーロンマスクが買収したTwitterの本社に彼が入ってきた際、（何処かからか取り外した）流し台を両手に持ってきたことが話題になりました。これは、”Let that sink in” 「（Twitter を買収したという）情報・現実を、皆さん徐々に受け止めてね」というイディオムを、文字通りに実際に行った （sink を 本社に in した）という彼なりのジョークです。<\/p>\n

直訳は「太陽の下にある物全て」で、こちらも意味は「ありとあらゆる物」という意味です。こちらの方がeverything but the kitchen sink よりも分かりやすい比喩ですね。<\/p>\n
