以前、manyやa lot ofの類語を山ほど紹介する記事<\/a>を書いたところ意外とアクセスが多くあったので、今回はその反対の “few” や “little” の類義語を（many 程はないですが）思いつくだけ紹介したいと思います（新しい表現を見つけ次第、追加します）。<\/p>\n

a few<\/h2>\n

「少し」を意味する代表的な英単語です。”a few” が「少しの」という意味なのに対して、冠詞がないただの “few”は「ほとんど〜ない」と否定の意味が強くなります（受験で習った人も多いでしょう）。very few といえば、さらに強調することもできます。例えば、”I have a few friends” = 「少し友達がいる」、”I have few friends” =「友達がほとんどいない」、”I have very few friends” = 「友達がほとんど\/全然いない」です。<\/p>\n

具体的にfew は数で表すといくつなのか、というのは結構議論を呼ぶ疑問ですが、まあ大体２から１０の間だと思えば問題ないと思います（ただこれは修飾する名詞にも依存し、例えば a few days は 2, 3日のイメージ）。なお、quite a few \/not a few で「多くの」という意味になるのも有名です。<\/p>\n

a little<\/h2>\n

先ほどのfewは数えられる名詞に対して使われるのですが、littleは数えられない名詞 (time や information)に対して使われます。fewと同様に、a little が 「少しの」、 (very) little が「ほとんどない、ごく僅かの」という意味になります。<\/p>\n

また、Little は文頭で使われて倒置文を作ることもたまにあり、この場合はknow や realise という動詞がよく使われます。（例: “Little<\/strong> did I<\/strong> know that my two-week trip would turn into a one-year stay” 「二週間の旅行の予定がまさか１年間滞在することになるなんて、（当時は）思いもしなかった」）。ここで倒置が起きるのは否定の単語が文頭に置かれているからで、例えば他にも “not only ~ but also …”構文でも倒置が起きることがあります (“Not only did I<\/strong> forget to shave my beard, but I also forgot my wallet” 「ヒゲを剃るのを忘れただけでなく、財布も忘れた」)。<\/p>\n

a bit<\/h2>\n

few と比べてカジュアルな表現で、会話でかなり頻繁に使います。a bit of で名詞を修飾する<\/strong><\/span>ことも出来ますし (“a bit of a disappointment”: 「少しの失望」, “a bit of<\/strong> advice” 「少しのアドバイス」 )、副詞として形容詞や動詞を修飾することも出来<\/span>て<\/strong> (“I’m a bit<\/strong> tired” = 「少し疲れた」)、更には名詞てしても使える<\/strong><\/span>（”Do you want a bit<\/strong>?”「少し欲しい？」）、とても便利な単語です。また、few と同様に、”quite a bit” で「多くの」という意味になります。<\/p>\n

a tad<\/h2>\n

“a bit”の代わりに使える、カジュアルな表現です (ただ、個人的にはbit の方がよく断然多く耳にします)。例: I was a bit<\/strong> embarrassed ≒ I was a tad<\/strong> embarrassed　「ちょっと恥ずかしかった」。bit と tad を両方組み合わせることもあるようです。（例：I was a tad bit<\/strong> tired 「ちょっと疲れた」）<\/p>\n

a small number\/amount of ~<\/h2>\n

文字通り「少数・少量の」という意味です。number は数えられる名詞、amountは数えられない名詞に使います。(例： a small number of students; a small amount of time)<\/p>\n

a couple of<\/h2>\n

基本的には「２つの」という意味ですが（couple ＝ カップル なので）、実際は幅があることが多いです (大体、２〜４くらいのイメージ)。そのため、”I’ll contact you in a couple of days” と言われたのに、二日後に連絡が来ないことは十分にあり得ます。<\/p>\n

a piece of<\/h2>\n

「一つの、一切れ」という意味 (例：a piece of cloth = “布切れ” ) ですが、数えられない名詞の数を表したい時とかにも使います (“a piece of paper” = 「一枚の紙」、 two pieces of evidence = 「二つの証拠」)。また、“a piece of cake”<\/strong> は直訳すると「一切れのケーキ」という意味ですが、実際は「超簡単だ、朝飯前だ」という意味の有名なイディオムです。他にも、“a piece of sh*t” <\/strong> = 「くそのかけら」、転じて「全く役に立たない物」という汚いスラングがあります。peace (平和)と発音が全く同じで綴りも似ているので、要注意。<\/p>\n

a spoon of<\/h2>\n

「１さじの」という意味です（レシピとかでよく使われます）。例えば、カフェとかでアメリカンコーヒーに少しだけミルクを入れて欲しい時は 、僕は “long black with a spoon of milk” と言うことが多いです (ちなみに、エスプレッソにミルクをほんの僅かだけ入れて欲しい時は、単に”macchiato” (マキアート)と言えば大丈夫です。macchiatoはイタリア語で「染み」という意味で、エスプレッソをミルクで少し染みらせるイメージです)。<\/p>\n

a hint of<\/h2>\n

hintは「ヒントを出す」の hint ですが、a hint of ~で「少量の~」という意味になります（最近、あるスイーツの広告で “a hint of maple cinnamon”「少しのメープルのシナモン」と書かれているのを見て知りました）。一見、この意味は「ヒント」と全く関係ないように思えますが、ヒントを「（答えがわからない程度の）少量の情報」と考えたら納得がいくかもしれません。<\/p>\n

a slice of<\/h2>\n

「１スライスの」という意味です。等分されたピザとかを数えるときによく使います。(a slice\/two slices of pizza)<\/p>\n

a pinch of<\/h2>\n

「ひと摘みの」という意味です (“a pinch of salt” = 「ひと摘みの塩」)。 これに関連して、”take ~ with a pinch of salt” という有名なイディオムがあり、直訳すると「~をひとつまみの塩と一緒に食べる」という意味ですが、実際は「~を話半分で聞く、眉に唾をつけて聞く」という意味になります。take ~ with a grain of salt<\/strong> とも言います。<\/p>\n

a paucity of<\/h2>\n

paucity は「不十分な量や数」を意味するフォーマルな単語で、主にニュース記事や論文などで使われます (a paucity of data\/information = 情報\/データの不足)。ちょっとカッコいい英文を書きたいときに使うのがおすすめです。”Because of the data<\/strong> paucity, …<\/strong>” 「データ量不足<\/strong>が原因で, …」のようにも使えます。<\/p>\n

a dearth of<\/span><\/h2>\n

paucity と同様にフォーマルな表現で、何かが不足・欠乏しているときに使います（a dearth of information\/understanding）。<\/p>\n

a lick of<\/h2>\n

lick は普通「舐める」という動詞で使われますが、a lick of … で「（舐める時のように）少量の」という意味にもなります。否定で使われると、「少しも…ない」という, not at all のような意味になります（例えば、without knowing a lick of<\/strong> English で 「全く英語を知らず・分からずに」という意味になります）<\/p>\n

a handful of<\/h2>\n

“hand” (手) が ful（一杯） で「一握りの、一つかみの」という意味です。例えば、”a handful of coins” で「一つかみのコイン」<\/p>\n

a tinge of<\/h2>\n

少しの感情、もしくは色を表すときによく使います。”a tinge of sadness\/anger\/guilt” 「少しの悲しみ\/怒り\/罪悪感」、 “a tinge of red” 「少しの赤色」<\/p>\n

a length of<\/h2>\n

紐など、細長いものの一部を表すときに使います (“a length of rope\/timber 「ロープ・木材の一部」)<\/p>\n

a drop\/drip of<\/h2>\n

液体の一滴を表すのに使います（例：a drop\/drip of water: 一滴の水）<\/p>\n

a trickle of<\/h2>\n

trickle は動詞の用法だと「（液体が）チョロチョロと流れる、したたる」という意味になります（例：Warm blood trickled down her leg「生暖かい血が彼女の足へ滴り落ちた」）。そのため、a trickle of ~で「〜のしたたり」という意味になります (“a trickle of blood\/tears” 「（チョロチョロと）滴る血\/涙」)。<\/p>\n

an ounce of<\/h2>\n

ounce （オンス）はアメリカで使われている単位で「約２８グラム」を意味しますが、少量のものを表すのにも使われます （例： “I doubt anyone feels an ounce of sympathy<\/strong> for her” = 「彼女に少しでも<\/strong>同情する人がいるとは思えない」）。また、”An ounce of prevention<\/strong> is worth a pound of cure” 「少量の<\/strong>予防は大量の治療に値する」という英語の格言も存在します（pound = 16 ounces ≒ 453グラムで、ここでは ounceとの対比で「大量の」という意味の比喩で使われています。他の文では、普通 poundは「多い」という意味では使われません。）<\/p>\n

a touch of<\/h2>\n

ご存知の通り、touch は普通「触る」という動詞ですが、a touch of ~で少しの量を表すのにも使えます。基本的に、数えられない概念に対して使うことが多いです（例: a touch of irony\/humour\/convenience\/flavour = 「少しの皮肉\/ユーモア\/利便性\/風味、雰囲気」）<\/p>\n

tidbit (US) \/titbit (UK)<\/h2>\n

「ちょっとした面白い情報、噂話、ニュース」を表すのに使います。”I’ll share some titbits of gossip<\/strong> about them” =「彼らについてのちょっとしたおいしい噂話<\/strong>をシェアするよ」。また、少量の美味な料理を表すのにも使えます  “tidbit of caviar<\/strong> (ちょこっとのキャビア)” 。<\/p>\n

a ray of (hope)<\/h2>\n

ray は「光線、一筋の光」という意味ですが、a ray of hope<\/strong><\/span> で「わずかな希望\/光」という意味になります。また、これと似た表現に “sliver lining” 「希望の光」という表現もあります（過去記事  「一発屋」「飴と鞭」: 意外と英語に訳せる日本語の表現１０+<\/a> を参照）。日本語でも英語でも、希望を（暗闇の中に見える）光に喩えていて面白いですね。<\/p>\n

a glimmer of (hope)<\/h2>\n

glimmerは動詞だと「かすかに、キラッと光る」という意味で、名詞では比喩的に「（一瞬の、かすかに見えるポジティブな）サイン、前兆」を表します（上記の”a ray of” と似てますね）。基本的には “a glimmer of hope” で「かすかに見える希望の光」というフレーズで使いますが、他にも “a glimmer of joy” 「一瞬の喜び」のように使えます。<\/p>\n

several<\/h2>\n

fewと同様に正確な数は決まっていませんが、few よりも少し多くてmanyよりは少ないイメージです。例： “I have seen the film several<\/strong> times<\/strong>” ＝「その映画を数回<\/strong>見たことがある」<\/p>\n

some<\/h2>\n

日本語で「いくつかの、多少の」と訳されることが多いですが、この訳は半分正しくて半分不正確です。確かに、few と同様に少ない量を表すのにも使いますが (例： “I know some of them” =「彼らの何人かは知っている」)、基本的には「よくわからない数<\/strong><\/span>」を表すのにsomeは使われます  (ケンブリッジ辞書<\/a>では someを “an amount or number of something that is not stated or not known” と定義しています)。例えば、Some people believe that …　は「…を信じる人もいる」という意味で、「実際どれくらいの人がそれを信じているか分からない<\/strong>けど、信じる人は少なからずいる」というニュアンスです。<\/p>\n
