この記事では、中学英語でも習うような簡単な名詞の以外の意外な動詞用法を紹介します。面白いものを見つけ次第、随時更新していきたいと思います。<\/p>\n

lunch<\/h2>\n

lunch は「お昼ご飯、ランチ」という名詞ですが、lunch (with …) で「(…と)ランチする」という意味の動詞で使うこともあります。<\/p>\n

I was lunching<\/strong> with<\/strong> my friend.
\n友達とランチ<\/strong>していた。<\/p>\n

baby<\/h2>\n

baby は「赤ちゃん」ですが、「赤ちゃんのように甘やかす」という意味の動詞 (treat someone like a baby) にもなります。これに関連して、”manbaby” というスラングがあり、意味は「赤ちゃんのような子供っぽい男」というネガティブな単語（名詞）です。<\/p>\n

She was babied<\/strong> by her grandparents
\n彼女は祖父母にかなり甘やかされていた<\/strong>。<\/p>\n

labour<\/h2>\n

labour (アメリカ英語はlabor) は「労働」という名詞ですが、「一生懸命働く、努力する」もしくは「自分のアイデアや感情などを（必要以上に）繰り返し主張・説明する」という意味の動詞にもなります。 後者の意味は、 “labour the point” というフレーズで使われることが多いのですが、他にも “You don’t have to labuor this” 「（今以上丁寧に）これを説明する必要はない」 という風にも使われます（僕はこのフレーズでこの意味を知りました）。<\/p>\n

Just a brief explanation should be enough, and you don’t have to labour<\/strong> the point.
\n簡潔な説明だけで十分なはずだ。繰り返しくどくどと説明する<\/strong>必要はないよ。<\/p>\n

sweat<\/h2>\n

sweatは「汗」という名詞ですが、比喩的に「一生懸命努力する」(≒ work hard)、もしくは「（汗をかくほど）心配する」という意味の動詞にもなります。余談ですが、ポカリスウェットは名前に「汗」が入っているせいで、英語圏の人はあまり飲みたがらないそうです。<\/p>\n

We sweated<\/strong> to get this result.
\nこの結果を得るのに汗水垂らして努力した<\/strong>。<\/p>\n

Don’t sweat<\/strong> the details.
\n細かいことを過度に心配する<\/strong>な<\/p>\n

ghost<\/h2>\n

ghost は「おばけ、ゴースト」という名詞ですが、スラングで「急に関係や連絡を断つ」という意味になります。急にお化けのようにいなくなる、というニュアンスですね。ただ、英語圏のテレビ番組で一人の若者が “He ghoseted me” のようなセリフを言った際に、それを聞いた中年の男性が「え、ghosted?」みたいな感じで困惑しているシーンを見たことがあるので、最近生まれたスラングかもしれません。<\/p>\n

I got ghosted<\/strong> by him after a first date.
\n最初のデートの後、彼から連絡を断たれてしまった。<\/strong><\/p>\n

anger<\/h2>\n

anger は「怒り」という意味の名詞ですが、「怒らせる」という意味の他動詞 (≒make someone angry）でも使われることがあります 。なので、受け身で使うと「怒る、イライラする」という意味になります。<\/p>\n

I was angered<\/strong> by his rude behaviour.
\n彼の無礼な態度に怒りを感じた。<\/strong><\/p>\n

floor<\/h2>\n

floor は「床」ですが、「床に叩きつける」という意味や、比喩的に「（床に倒れさせるように）驚愕させる、驚きで言葉を失わせる」という動詞にもなります。<\/p>\n

I was floored<\/strong> to know that it is worth one million yen.
\nそれが100万円相当だと知って、驚愕した。<\/strong><\/p>\n

parade<\/h2>\n

parade は文字通り「パレード」ですが、比喩的に「(パレードのように)ひけらかす、見せびらかす」という少し皮肉的な意味の動詞になります。<\/p>\n

He paraded<\/strong> his luxury car on social media.
\n彼はSNSで豪華な車を見せびらかせていた。<\/strong><\/p>\n

fuel<\/h2>\n

fuel は「燃料」という意味の名詞ですが、比喩的に「（火に油を注ぐように何かを）刺激する、勢いなどを増加させる」という意味でも使われます。そのため、何かを誇張したい時に使えます。 語感が近い動詞に “boost” 「ブーストする、増加させる」や、inflame 「（感情などを）燃え上がらせる」があります。誇張表現が好きな方は、過去記事「英語の大袈裟な誇張表現１５」<\/a>も参照してみてください<\/p>\n

The growth in revenue was fueled<\/strong> by robust demand for cars.
\n車への根強い需要によって、収益の増加の勢いが増した。<\/strong><\/p>\n

time<\/h2>\n

time はご存知「時間」ですが、「時期やタイミングを見計らう、調整する、計画する」という動詞にもなります。<\/p>\n

They timed<\/strong> the launch of new products to coincide with the event.
\n彼らは新しい製品を、そのイベントと同時期になるようタイミングを見計らって<\/strong>発表した。<\/p>\n

pain<\/h2>\n

pain は「痛み」という名詞ですが、「（肉体的または精神的な）痛みをもたらす」という意味の動詞にもなります。<\/p>\n

It pains<\/strong> me to say this.
\nこれを言うのは精神的に苦しい。<\/strong><\/p>\n

fault<\/h2>\n

fault は「過ち」という意味の名詞（テニスのフォルトです）ですが、「欠点や批判するポイントを見つける」という動詞にもなります。否定表現と一緒に使われて「文句のつけようがない、責められない」という意味になることが多いです。<\/p>\n

I have stayed here many times and it’s hard to fault<\/strong> the place.
\n何度もここに滞在したことがあるけど、この場所にケチをつける<\/strong>のは困難だ。<\/p>\n

weather<\/h2>\n

weather は普通「天気」ですが、weather (the storm) で「（嵐を）乗り切る」という意味の動詞になり、さらに「（困難などを）乗り越える」という意味にもなります。。<\/p>\n

The company has weathered<\/strong> the crisis well with remarkable resiliency.
\n驚くべき回復力で、その企業は危機をうまく乗り越えた<\/strong>。<\/p>\n

cloud<\/h2>\n

cloud は普通「雲」ですが、比喩的に「（判断などを）鈍らせる」という意味の動詞にもなります。<\/p>\n

I had some drinks then and that clouded<\/strong> my judgement.
\nその時お酒を飲んでいて、それが私の判断を鈍らせた<\/strong>。<\/p>\n

occasion<\/h2>\n

「機会」という名詞ですが、「引き起こす」という cause と同じ意味の動詞としても（フォーマルな文脈で）使われます。<\/p>\n

The incident occasioned<\/strong> a great number of discussions.
\nその出来事は、数多くの議論を巻き起こした<\/strong><\/p>\n

egg someone on<\/h2>\n

egg は「卵」ですが、egg someone on で「someone を（悪いことをするよう）そそのかす、煽る」という全然違う意味の動詞になります。<\/p>\n

They are egging<\/strong> him on<\/strong> to fight.
\n彼らは喧嘩をするよう彼をそそのかしている<\/strong><\/p>\n

pencil in<\/h2>\n

pencil は「鉛筆」ですが、pencil someone\/something in で「someone\/something を（sスケジュールやリストに）暫定的な予定をいれる」という意味になります。カレンダーに取り敢えず（ペンではなく）鉛筆で予定を書いておく、というニュアンスです。<\/p>\n

Pencil<\/strong> me in<\/strong> for lunch on Friday
\n金曜のランチ、私もとりあえず数に入れて<\/strong>おいて<\/p>\n

team up<\/h2>\n

team は「チーム」ですが、team up で「（タッグを組んで）協力する」という意味になります。<\/p>\n

I teamed up with<\/strong> him to start our business.
\n彼と協力して<\/strong>ビジネスを始めた<\/p>\n

size up<\/h2>\n

size は「サイズ」ですが、size up で 「評価する、判断する、品定めする」という意味になります。<\/p>\n

We had a lot of interviews to size up<\/strong> the candidates.
\n候補者を品定めする<\/strong>ためにたくさんの面接をした。<\/p>\n

zone out<\/h2>\n

zone は「ゾーン」ですが、zone out で「周りの会話などに集中しないでぼーっとする」という意味です。集中力が非常に高まっている状態を日本語で「ゾーンに入る」と言いますが、out なのでその反対（意識が遠のく感じ）だと思えばわかりやすいです。<\/p>\n
