この記事では、go や work, catch など中学レベルの英単語を使うのに意外と難しい、句動詞の英会話表現を紹介します。<\/p>\n

catch on<\/h2>\n

意味：流行る、バズる<\/h3>\n

例文: <\/span>The service has caught on like wildfire<\/span><\/strong> among teens
\n（訳）そのサービスは１０代の若者の間で流行の火が山火事のように広がった<\/strong><\/span>（大ヒットとなった）<\/p>\n

一言：流行したことを強調するには、例文のように “like wildfire”（山火事のように）と言うことが多いです（流行の火が山火事のように広がる、という比喩）。<\/p>\n

catch up (with ~)<\/h2>\n

意味：（親しい〜に）に久しぶりに会って、近況を報告し合う<\/h3>\n

例文: We should catch up<\/span> <\/strong>soon!
\n<\/span>（訳）近況報告し<\/strong><\/span>ようよ！<\/p>\n

一言：友達とかに久しぶりにチャットして会う約束をする時などに使います。<\/p>\n

speak up<\/h2>\n

意味：声を上げる、正直に話す<\/h3>\n

例文: I really wanted you to speak up<\/strong><\/span> in front of them.
\n<\/span>（訳） 彼らの目の前で本当のことをはっきり言って<\/strong><\/span>欲しかったのに。<\/p>\n

一言： 少し言いにくいことをハッキリと話す、というニュアンスです。<\/p>\n

own up (to ~)<\/h2>\n

意味：過失や悪事などを認める、白状する<\/h3>\n

例文: He owned up to<\/strong><\/span> making mistakes
\n<\/span>（訳） 彼は間違えた事を白状した<\/strong><\/span>。<\/p>\n

一言：自分で何かを白状する場合によく使います。<\/p>\n

chat ~ up<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

意味：~を口説く<\/h3>\n

例文: He’s trying to chat<\/strong><\/span> her up<\/strong><\/span>.
\n<\/span>（訳）彼は彼女を口説こう<\/strong>としている。<\/p>\n

一言： 普通、chat は talk の類義語で 「（カジュアルに）話す、チャットする」という意味で、 “chat with ~” や  “have a chat with ~”　のように使いますが、”chat up” という句動詞では口説くという意味になります。<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

touch on ~<\/h2>\n

意味：~軽く言及する、触れる<\/h3>\n

例文:  I will touch on<\/strong><\/span> the subject later.
\n<\/span>（訳）その話題は後で触れる<\/strong><\/span>つもりだ。<\/p>\n

一言： 日本語でも「（話題に）触れる」と言いますね。また、touch base で「連絡する」という意味になります。<\/p>\n

show off ~<\/h2>\n

意味：~を（自慢げに）見せびらかす<\/h3>\n

例文:  He showed off<\/strong><\/span> his wine collection.
\n<\/span>（訳）彼は自分のワインコレクションを自慢げに見せびらかした<\/strong><\/span>。<\/p>\n

一言： 英会話やチャットで頻繁に使う表現で、”He is a show-off” (彼は自慢野郎だ、見せびらかすのが好きな奴だ) のように名詞としても使えます。<\/p>\n

work out<\/h2>\n

意味：（ジムなどで）鍛える、運動する<\/h3>\n

例文: He works out<\/strong><\/span> every day.
\n<\/span>（訳）彼は毎日鍛えている<\/strong><\/span>。<\/p>\n

一言：”workout” で「運動、筋トレ」という名詞として使われます。muscle training とはあまり言いません。<\/p>\n

open up (to ~)<\/h2>\n

意味：（~に）心を開く<\/h3>\n

例文: I guess I should open up<\/strong><\/span> to my girlfriend more.
\n<\/span>（訳）多分、彼女にもっと心を開く<\/strong><\/span>べきなんだろうな<\/p>\n

一言： 日本語でも「オープンに接する」と言いますよね。ちなみに、「（アイデアや案を）受け入れるようになる」というには、warm to the idea などと言います。(ここでの warm は動詞<\/strong>ですので、 He is finally warming to the idea のように使います)<\/p>\n

hold onto\/on to ~<\/h2>\n

意味：（~に）固執する、(気持ちや物に) しがみつく<\/h3>\n

例文: Don’t hold onto<\/strong><\/span> the past.
\n<\/span>（訳）過去にしがみつく<\/strong><\/span>な（過去のことは忘れろ）<\/p>\n

一言： 何かを手で抱えて (hold) 手放さないようにするイメージです。<\/p>\n

go at ~<\/h2>\n

意味：（人を）攻撃する、口撃する<\/h3>\n

例文: The more he goes <\/strong><\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/strong><\/span> me, the harder I’ll <\/span>go.
\n<\/span>（訳）彼が俺をもっと攻撃してくる<\/strong><\/span>ようなら、俺はもっと強くやり返すよ。<\/p>\n

一言：ドラマの口喧嘩しているシーンでこの表現を知りました。<\/p>\n

go out with ~<\/h2>\n

意味：~とデートする<\/h3>\n

例文: I’ve been going out with<\/strong><\/span> her for 3 years. (= I’ve been dating with\/in a relationship with her for 3 years.)
\n<\/span>（訳）彼女とは３年付き合っている<\/strong><\/span>。<\/p>\n

一言：go out で「外に出かける、遊びに行く」という意味でよく使います (e.g. go out for a drink = 飲みに行く)。ちなみに、eat out で「外食する」です。<\/p>\n

break up (with~ )<\/h2>\n

意味：(~と) 別れる、恋愛関係を終わりにする<\/h3>\n

例文: I broke up with<\/strong><\/span> my boyfriend yesterday.
\n<\/span>（訳）昨日彼氏と別れた<\/strong><\/span>。<\/p>\n

一言： 恋愛関係がbreak する(壊れる)、という比喩です。主語を複数にして We broke up のようにも使えます。<\/p>\n

come up with~<\/h2>\n

意味：思い付く<\/h3>\n

例文: I’ve just come up with<\/strong><\/span> a good idea!
\n<\/span>（訳）良いアイデアを思いついた<\/strong><\/span>！<\/p>\n

一言：受験でも習う有名な表現ですね。<\/p>\n

come across ~<\/h2>\n

意味：偶然（人に）出会う、（物や機会を）見つける<\/h3>\n

例文: I just came across<\/strong> <\/span>him in the city.
\n<\/span>（訳）さっき彼に街で偶然会った<\/strong><\/span>。<\/p>\n

一言：街角でばったり会うイメージです。bump into (someone) とも言います。<\/p>\n

get back to ~<\/h2>\n

意味：~に後で折り返す、（即答できないので）後でまた連絡する<\/h3>\n

例文: I’ll get back to<\/strong><\/span> you as soon as I get that information.
\n<\/span>（訳）その情報を掴み次第、また連絡する<\/strong><\/span>ね<\/p>\n

一言：電話とかチャットとかでよく使う表現です。<\/p>\n

get along (with ~)<\/h2>\n

意味：(~と) 仲良くする、うまくやる<\/h3>\n

例文: I think we’ll get along.
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/span>（訳）私たち、仲良くやっていける<\/strong><\/span>と思う<\/p>\n

一言：「仲良くできる事」よりも「仲がいい」ということを強調する場合は、”get along well<\/span> with ~”とwell を入れた方が無難です。<\/p>\n

put off ~<\/h2>\n

意味1：~を延期する、先延ばしにする<\/h3>\n

例文: I shouldn’t have p<\/strong>ut off<\/strong> <\/span>doing my homework until the last minute
\n<\/span>（訳）宿題をするのをギリギリまで先延ばしにする<\/strong><\/span>べきではなかった。<\/p>\n

意味2：~を引かせる、しらけさせる<\/h3>\n

例文: I was put off<\/strong> <\/span>by his words.
\n<\/span>（訳）彼の言葉に引いた<\/strong><\/span>。<\/p>\n

一言： put off が「延期する」という意味になるのは、受験でも習うので比較的有名ですが、他にも「引かせる、しらけさせる」という意味もあります<\/strong>。また、「延期する」という意味を持つ単語に “procrastinate” というものがあり、こちらは「（めんどくさくて）先延ばしにする」という意味でよく使います。put off や postpone「延期する」と比べると、procrastinate の方が よりもネガティブな意味合い（怠けている感）が強いです。例えば、 “Procrastinate now, don’t put it off” 「今すぐ先延ばしにしろ、（その決断を）後回しにするなよ」という英語のジョークがあります。<\/p>\n

feel for ~<\/h2>\n

意味：（~に）同情する<\/h3>\n

例文: I know what it is like, so I feel for you<\/strong><\/span>, Mike.
\n<\/span>（訳）それがどんな感じか知っているから、お前には同情する<\/strong><\/span>よ、マイク。<\/p>\n

一言： 文字通りには「〜のために思う、感じる」ですね。人を励ます時に使います。次のfall for と似ているので、混同しないように。<\/p>\n

fall for ~<\/h2>\n

意味：（~に）惚れる、恋に落ちる<\/h3>\n

例文: I really like you, and I’ve actually fallen for<\/strong><\/span> you.
\n<\/span>（訳）あなたのことが好きだし、実はあなたに恋してる。<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

一言： 日本語と同じで「落ちる (fall)」というのが面白いですね。個人的に「好き」や「惚れる」よりも意味・感情が強い表現だと思います。そして、”I love you”は “I fall for you” よりもさらに強い表現なので、気軽に言わない方が吉でしょう。<\/p>\n

kick off<\/h2>\n

意味：~が始まる<\/h3>\n

例文:  The festival finally kicked off<\/strong><\/span> yesterday.
\n<\/span>（訳） そのフェスティバルがついに昨日始まった。<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

一言： 通常はサッカーの「キックオフする」（コートの真ん中に置いてあるボールを蹴って試合開始する）を意味します。（日本語でも「今夜１９時にキックオフ」などと言いますよね）。また、日本語のビジネス用語としても最近使われているみたいです（キックオフミーティング＝最初のミーティング）。<\/p>\n

drop in\/by ~<\/h2>\n

意味：~に(ふらっと)立ち寄る<\/h3>\n

例文: He dropped by<\/strong><\/span> the hospital to visit his mother
\n<\/span>（訳）彼は母親のお見舞いのために病院に立ち寄った。<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

一言： この他にも、drop (someone) a line で「（メールなどで）〜に連絡する」という意味になります。<\/p>\n

run out of ~<\/h2>\n

意味：~が切れる、なくなる、足りない<\/h3>\n

例文: We’re running out of<\/strong> <\/span>time and money
\n<\/span>（訳）我々は時間とお金が足りない<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

一言： run short of ~ とも言います（a shortage of ~ で 「〜の不足」）<\/p>\n

play around with something<\/h2>\n

意味：(問題を解決するために)色々試す<\/h3>\n

例文: I’ll play around with<\/strong><\/span> these methods to see whether they are effective.
\n<\/span>（訳）これらの手法が効果的かどうかを調べるために、色々試してみよう<\/strong><\/span>。<\/p>\n

一言： play around with 人 (someone)<\/strong> <\/span>の場合は、「〜と夜遊びしている、浮気している」という意味になるので注意。<\/p>\n

watch out<\/h2>\n

意味：気を付けろ、危ない<\/h3>\n

例文: He shouted, “Watch out!”
\n<\/strong><\/span><\/span>（訳）彼は「危ない！」<\/strong><\/span>と叫んだ。<\/p>\n

一言：注意を喚起する時に使います。<\/p>\n

cut in<\/h2>\n

意味：話に割って入る<\/h3>\n

例文: Sorry to cut it<\/strong><\/span>, but the teacher is looking for you.
\n<\/span>（訳）話の途中<\/strong><\/span>悪いけど、先生があなたを探しているよ。<\/p>\n

一言： “interrupt” もcut it とほぼ同じ意味で使われます（e.g. Sorry to interrupt you）<\/p>\n

wear out<\/h2>\n

意味：（１） 擦り切れる、ダメになる （２） 疲れ果てさせる、<\/h3>\n

例文 (1): Why do my shoes wear out<\/strong> <\/span>so quickly
\n<\/span>（訳）なんで靴がすぐダメになる<\/strong><\/span>んだろう。<\/p>\n
