美人局

October 30, 2022

Yomi

つつもたせ

Rōmaji

tsutsumotase

Type

word

Meaning

A honeytrap (where an attractive woman seduces a male victim into getting lucky, and later her partner in crime shows up and blackmails him for money.)

Synonym

ハニートラップ

Additional Info

Its reading is very special and is often misread as “びじんきょく”. On the internet, some people intentionally use or allude to the wrong reading as a joke, as in “びじんきょく (何故か変換できない)” and “び…美人局”. Interestingly, in the specific phrase 美人局アナ — although it’s not commonly used except when one talks about this matter —, the wrong reading becomes correct because its component words are 美人 (びじん, “beautiful”) + 局アナ(きょくあな, “employed anchorperson”).

Example

美人局には気を付けよう
Beware of honeytraps.
