It is said that this word originates from the old Japanese radio show (1948-1960) titled “インフォメーションアワー・社会の窓“. This show mainly talked about hidden aspects/issues of Japanese society, and the word 社会の窓 started to be used humorously to let someone know that their fly is open and their hidden thing is at risk of being exposed to society.
