It’s used to describe your feeling when you want to see something despite you knowing that you will find it terrifying and/or unpleasant.

Example

5年前に買ったヨーグルトを見つけて、怖いもの見たさで開けたらめっちゃ臭かった
I found yoghurt I bought five years ago, and because of the urge to see something terrifying, I opened it and it was so stinky.
